Welcome
Intouch Health is an Integrative Body Therapy clinic in Mt Albert. We provide craniosacral therapy for a range of musculoskeletal concerns (acute and chronic), and specialise in treating stress, anxiety, PTSD and trauma.
We also provide a range of massage therapy services, including oncology massage for people who have received or are currently undergoing treatment for cancer; remedial massage to treat a range of musculoskeletal concerns; myofascial release to treat issues relating to the connective tissues and scar tissue therapy for those presenting with a history of radiation and/or surgery.
Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy emerged in the osteopathic tradition. The ‘cranial concept’ was developed by Dr William Sutherland in the late 1800's, and continues to evolve to this day. Sutherland investigated the motion of the cranial bones, and found that all tissues in the body are inherently motile, and as such are engaged in a rhythmic ‘breathing’ like movement that permeates the body. Sutherland called this ‘primary respiration’ which is separate to and distinct from 'lung breathing'. This inner breathing or rhythmic motion is an expression of health physically, emotionally and energetically.
When the body is exposed to physical, emotional or environmental trauma these rhythmic movements or patterns of health are disrupted and the body’s ability to express health is impaired. The impact of these stressors on the body may result in a wide range of health concerns.
Craniosacral therapy is extremely gentle. It is an effective treatment for a wide range of health concerns, including those which are physiological, psychological or energetic in nature.
Remedial massage
Remedial massage aims to restore optimum health, function and mobility to the soft tissues (muscles, tendons, connective tissues, ligaments) and joints of the body. Massage is commonly used to relieve postural imbalance, address soft tissue injury, relieve pain, reduce stress and enhance feelings of wellbeing.
Massage therapy lengthens tight and congested tissues, removes metabolic waste and increases circulation to ensure the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. Stress hormones are reduced and feelings of wellbeing are enhanced by the release of serotonin and oxytocin (the body’s natural antidepressant and mood enhancers). Massage decreases blood pressure and heart rate and soothes the nervous system.
A typical treatment is likely to include a range of therapeutic approaches, including aspects of relaxation massage, deep tissue massage, neuromuscular therapy and myofascial release. A range of assessment methods may be utilised and remedial exercises may be recommended.
Oncology massage
Oncology Massage is appropriate for anyone who has received or is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. As with all forms of body therapy, massage is tailored to meet the needs of the individual. Treatment may range from a more remedial focus of decreasing post-operative edema and scar tissue, to facilitating deep relaxation of the body and mind.
Research by Cassileth and Vickers (2004) found oncology massage significantly reduces pain, fatigue, nausea, anxiety, depression and a range of other symptoms.
Oncology massage is gentle and non-invasive. It provides a safe and supportive environment to negotiate the physical, emotional and psychological needs that come with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
